Hmm...if the wings were a bit more orange, I would guess a tarantula hawk???
Thanks for responding. Notice the short antennas and green eyes? We were thinking it was possibly a square headed wasp, but it doesn't quite match up. It's got to be some sort of wasp, though.
I suspect it is a fly of some sort. The antennae do not seem to be long enough for a wasp.
Hi...would you mind sharing which state you're writing from? I think we just found the same insect IN OUR HOUSE! Not quite 2.5" long though, maybe 1.5-2.0". I just want to find out if it will sting (will determine if I kill it or release it/shoo it back outside!) Thanks!
We found this insect in Texas.
I looks like a robber fly too me.
